Born in Miami, Florida, Robert Shepperd and his family moved to central Virginia in 1968. He developed his painting technique based on a class he took in 1986 in a Lynchburg Recreation Department class taught by the late artist Buck Tyree. Robert learned to paint extremely realistic and lush mountain landscapes and creek/lake scenes in acrylics. After one year Robert Shepperd started entering his work in art shows and selling his paintings.
Life and a full-time job interrupted, but Robert managed to keep painting and expanding his talent until 2007 when he once again started to enter his paintings in local competitions.His paintings have garnered regional attention with honors such as the 2010 Amherst Art Society 2nd-Acrylics award and Artists’ Choice as well as 2010 Lynchburg Art Festival McBride Blackburn Opticians Award. The next year, he won 2011 Amherst Art Society 1st-Acrylics Award, 2011 Artists’ Choice, as well as 2011 Smith Mountain Arts Council 1st-Acrylics Award. For 2012 he won an Honorable Mention at the Poplar Forest Plein Air Competition, an Estate Specialists Award at the Lynchburg Art Festival, and from the Smith Mountain Arts Council a 1st Acrylics award and Peoples’ Choice award. Most recently, Shepperd accepted a 1st Acrylics award in 2013 from the Amherst Art Society and a 2013 Artists’ Choice award, a Lynchburg Art Festival Garrard-Davidson Award, and the Smith Mountain Arts Council Merit Award.
